KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Carleton College’s regionally-ranked duo of Bridget Doyle (Sr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) and Anne Lombardi (Jr./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) saw their season end following a 6-1, 6-2 defeat in the opening round of the doubles bracket at the NCAA Championships.
Thursday’s matchup pitted two doubles pairings that were both ranked No. 2 in their respective regions: Doyle and Lombardi in the Central Region and from the Atlantic South Region, sisters Jenny and Lindsey Liles of the University of the South.
Doyle and Lombardi were the first Carleton women’s doubles team to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Allison Valenta and Phoebe Anderson did so in 1995.
Today’s result snapped a 10-match win streak for the duet and concluded the collegiate career for Doyle, who earned All-MIAC honors in both singles and doubles during each of her four seasons as a Knight. She will also pick up All-America status as a result of teaming with first-year Mikayla Becich (Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) to win the doubles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional in September.
Lombardi also secured All-Conference honors for three consecutive years in both singles and doubles. Combined Doyle and Lombardi went undefeated in doubles during conference matches and helped the Knights make back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Team Championships for the first time since 1995 and 1996.
While the Knights lose Doyle to graduation, Carleton will return five other all-conference performers for the 2013-14 campaign.
