WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s team kicked off its 2014 season with a pair of victories. The Knights opened the day with an 8-1 triumph over Saint Mary’s University followed by a 7-2 decision against Winona State University, a NCAA Division II program. Katherine Greenberg (Sr./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and Claire Spencer (So./Newport News, Va./Menchville) notched two wins apiece during singles action.
In the opening contest, the Knights (2-0, 1-0 MIAC) swept the three doubles matches and cruised to victories at first, second, fourth, and sixth singles.
Grace Davis (So./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) dropped the opening set at third singles, 6-1, but bounced back to take the second set by a 6-0 margin. Davis then out-lasted her opponent by a 12-10 score to close out the set.
Against Winona State, the Knights dropped the top two doubles matches but recovered with a victory by Greenberg and Joyce Yu (So./Taipei, Taiwan/Taipei American School) at the third slot.
Upon moving to singles, Carleton won all six matches in straight sets, including Greenberg’s impressive 6-0, 6-0 result at fifth singles.
The Knights will face another Division II opponent on Sunday, Feb. 9, as they travel to face St. Cloud State University.
