Women's Tennis vs. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014 – 8:00 a.m. at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Knights win another close one, defeat UW-Whitewater

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Mikayla Becich (So./Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) beat a regionally-ranked singles player and teamed with Grace Davis (So./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) for a doubles win as the Carleton College women’s tennis team bested its third straight regionally-ranked opponent by topping University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 5-4.

The Knights, ranked No. 28 in the nation, improved to 9-1 this season after prevailing in the tightly contested match. Becich and Davis won 9-8 at second doubles while Katherine Greenberg (Sr./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and Molly Hemes (Sr./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) added an 8-6 win at third doubles.

Those results proved huge as Carleton, ranked sixth in the region, split the six singles matches with the fifth-ranked Warhawks.

Alexandra Bayliss edged Anne Lombardi (Sr./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) in a matchup of regionally-ranked singles players by a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) ledger. UW-Whitewater picked up another win at the second slot as the ranked Megan Huphreys defeated Claire Spencer (So./Newport News, Va./Menchville) by a 6-3, 6-1 tally.

Becich topped 18th-ranked Jackie Vitale at third singles, 6-3 and 7-6, to give both sides three points in the team competition. The Warhawks final tally came at fourth singles, but Greenberg’s 6-3 and 7-5 win meant the match hung on the result of fifth singles where Joyce Yu (So./Taipei, Taiwan/Taipei American School) battled Amy Upthagrove.

The Warhawk rookie won the first set, but Yu responded by taking the second and carried the momentum over to the third-set tiebreaker. After falling in the super tiebreaker yesterday, the Carleton sophomore was determined not to suffer that fate again and closed her match 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).

Carleton has two spring break matches remaining: Wednesday, March 26 vs. Concordia University (Wis.) at Thursday vs. national No. 10 DePauw University.
