LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team opened the 2013 season with a 7-2 triumph over St. Cloud State University, a Division II program. Katherine Greenberg (Jr./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) was one of three Knights that were victorious in both singles and doubles.
Carleton, ranked No. 30 in the nation, swept the Huskies in doubles, with Bridget Doyle (Sr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) and Anne Lombardi (Jr./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) winning, 8-5, at the top spot. Newcomers Mikayla Becich (Fy./Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) and Grace Davis (Fy./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) combined for an 8-3 victory, while Greenberg and Molly Hemes (Jr./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) once again teamed up, this time resulting in an 8-3 decision.
Lombardi cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles, while Becich was even more dominant at fourth singles as she didn’t drop a game in posting a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Greenberg won 6-2, 6-4, and Claire Spencer (Fy./Newport News, Va./Menchville) added a straight sets triumph, 6-1 and 6-1.
Carleton opens MIAC play on Thursday, Feb. 7 when the Knights take on Hamline University at 6:30 p.m.
