Becich Helps Knights Conclude Spring Trip with Win Over Colby

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team finished its spring break trip with a 5-4 victory over Colby College. Mikayla Becich (Fy./Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) was the lone Knight to secure victories in both single and doubles play on this day. Carleton got an early lead in the team competition by winning two of three doubles matches. That advantage proved crucial as the Knights and Mules split the six singles matches, including two contests that required a third set.

First-years Becich and Grace Davis (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) posted a dominating 8-0 victory at second doubles, while juniors Katherine Greenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and Molly Hemes (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) prevailed by an 8-5 score at the third spot.

The two squads alternated victories in the singles lineup with Carleton notching win at the first, third and fifth slots. Those three triumphs were enough to help the Knights (8-5) snap their three-match slide—all against squads that are currently nationally-ranked—and halt Colby’s six-match win streak.

Bridget Doyle (Sr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) took care of business in straight sets at first singles, prevailing 6-3 and 6-1. Becich pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, and 14-12 decision at third singles. Claire Spencer (Fy./Newport News, Va./Menchville) took care of business at the fifth spot, besting her opponent by a 6-4 and 6-0 margin.

Carleton returns home and will participate in the Midwest Invitational on April 5-6 in Madison, Wis. That tournament brings together several of the top squads in the region.
