CHICAGO, Ill. — The Carleton College women’s tennis team saw its 2013 campaign come to an end with a narrow 5-3 loss to No. 26 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater during the regional semifinals of the NCAA Championships. The back-and-forth match featured three ties and one lead change during the team competition.
UW-Whitewater (21-8) picked up the first point with an 8-5 win at second doubles as Megan Kasten and Jackie Vitale topped Mikayla Becich (Fy./Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) and Grace Davis (Fy./Neenah, Wis./Neenah).
The Knights (16-8) evened things up as Bridget Doyle (Sr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) and Anne Lombardi (Jr./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) posted their 10th consecutive victory. This one was an 8-6 triumph over the regionally-ranked duo of Alexandra Baylis and Sydney Divelbiss at first doubles.
The Warhawks momentarily edged back in front when Lauren Aguilar and Kelly Foster won 8-6 over Katherine Greenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and Molly Hemes (Green Bay, Wis./Preble), snapping the juniors seven-match win streak.
Claire Spencer (Fy./Newport News, Va./Menchville) posted a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory over Aguilar at fifth singles, leveling the match at two points apiece. Becich moved Carleton in front when she prevailed against Vitale at third singles by a 6-2, 6-4 margin.
The match was tied back up at 3-3 when UWW’s Kasten came out on top at fourth singles. Doyle dropped the opening set of her match against Divelbiss but came back to force the match to a third set. However, that match went unfinished as the Warhawks notched wins at second and sixth singles to close out the match.
Today’s loss, however, will not bring down the curtain on the collegiate career of Doyle, the lone senior on the roster. She and Lombardi received invitations to participate as a doubles tandem at the NCAA Division III Doubles Championships on May 23-25 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
