LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — First-year Kathryn Schmidt (Hopkins, Minn.) lost 6-0, 6-4 to Jackie Shtemberg from The College of New Jersey in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships. Schmidt finishes the year 15-3 in singles play.
Schmidt, the first Knight to reach the national tournament since Sara Russell ’06 at the end of the 2005 season, and Shtemberg were locked in several long rallies during the contest.“This was a great match, and good experience for Kathryn,” said Carleton Head Coach Luciano Battaglini. “This was the toughest opponent she played all year. Her opponent played an excellent match and made very few mistakes.
“It’s been a great year for Kathryn and the team. I look forward to seeing how we can improve heading into next year.”
Shtemberg advanced to play top seed Siobhan Finicane from Pomona-Pitzer in the second round.
