NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton College senior Karen Campbell (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) has been named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Women’s Track/Cross Country Academic All-District second team. She is the 10th Carleton student-athlete to receive the academic all-district honor this year.

Campbell, who was previously named to the 2008 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Cross Country All-Academic Team, earned USTFCCCA All-Region status last fall after placing 26th overall and helping the Knights finish fifth at the NCAA Central Region race at Oakland Acres Golf Course. She also qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the third time, where she ran a career-best time of 22:58.43 in her final race to place 160th overall.

On the track, Campbell earned All-MIAC honorable mention with a fourth-place finish at this year’s MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000 meter run with an NCAA provisional time of 37:09.04. She picked up another All-MIAC honorable mention in the 5,000 meter run with a fourth-place showing at 18:02.84.

In the classroom, Campbell completed a double major in economics and philosophy and posted a 3.75 GPA. She also served as a prefect for the college’s Academic Support Center as well as a Residence Assistant.

The Academic All-America program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
