NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recognized the Carleton College’s women’s program as a 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team. The Knights posted the third-best cumulative grade point average (3.590) in Division III.

A total of 100 Division III women’s track and field programs were recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Teams. Shenandoah University led all institutions with a 3.676 cumulative grade point average, followed by Whitworth University with a 3.641 team GPA. To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.100 cumulative grade-point average.

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) was one of six conferences to land six schools on the All-Academic list. The other MIAC teams on the chart were: Macalester College (3.550 GPA), College of Saint Benedict (3.470), St. Olaf College (3.460), Concordia College (3.360) and Gustavus Adolphus College (3.360).

Earlier in the week, the USTFCCCA named four members of Carleton’s track & field squad to its 2009 Division III Women’s All-Academic Track and Field Team. To receive this distinction, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.

A total of 274 student-athletes representing 91 Division III colleges and universities made up the 2009 All-Academic team, which was released on Tuesday. With four student-athletes on the list, Carleton was second among MIAC squads and tied for 20th in the nation.

Carleton’s quartet includes All-Americans Kelly Lovett (So./Portland, Ore./Lincoln) and Simone Childs-Walker (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), as well as teammates Karen Campbell (Sr./Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and Laura Roach (Jr./Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North).

Lovett finished seventh in the javelin at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships while Childs-Walker placed eighth in the 10,000-meter run at the outdoor meet and third in the 5,000-meter race at both the national indoor and outdoor track championships.

Campbell concluded her collegiate career with a provisional qualifying time in the 10,000-meter run at the 2009 MIAC Outdoor Championships. Roach was second in the steeplechase at the conference meet and steadily improved her provisional qualifying mark throughout the season. She missed a berth at nationals by only one second.

The MIAC totaled 18 award recipients with Gustavus Adolphus College (7), Bethel University (3), College of Saint Benedict (1), Concordia College (1), Hamline University (1), and St. Olaf College (1) also landing on the list.
