NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s track and field team won three events at the Carleton Relays on Saturday. Ellie Wilson (Fy./Roseville, Minn./Roseville) was first to the line in the 400-meter dash, Alison Smyth (Sr./Billings, Mont./Billings West) won the 1500-meter run, and the Knights entry in the 4x800-meter relay took top honors, nearly eclipsing the school record in the process.
The 1,500-meter run was the Knights’ top event as Carleton placed four racers among the top five finishers. Smyth established a new personal best in winning the event at 4:42.74, and Colette Celichowski (Fy./Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) placed third in running the distance for the first time in her college career, crossing the line at 4:47.60. Kaitlin Randolph (Sr./Drummond, Wis./Drummond) bettered her personal mark by nine seconds, taking fourth at 4:48.52, and Sarah Trautman (So./Lexington, Mass./BBN) finished fifth at 4:51.11.
Wilson raced the 400-meter distance outdoors for the first time in her young collegiate career and posted a winning time of 58.25. Anna Persmark (Fy./Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) was fifth in the event at 60.97.
Haley Johnson (Jr./Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) placed second in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:20.86, which sandwiched her among a trio of Division I racers from the University of North Dakota. Also in the event, Claire Karban (Jr./Davis, Calif./Davis) established a season best and Aurora Janes (Fy./Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) posted a personal best as both added top-10 finishes.
Carleton’s 4x800-meter relay missed setting a new program standard by two seconds. Smyth, Megan Erlandson (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy), Celichoswki, and Trautman recorded a time of 9:30.01, a whopping 36 seconds faster than second-place North Dakota and bettering the top time in the conference heading into the weekend.
Kao Sutton (So./Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) had a big meet in the field events. She established a personal best with a distance of 40.14 meters in the hammer. She finished second in the discus (38.51 meters) and was Carleton’s top finisher in the shot put.
Senior Shannon Mueller (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) turned in a solid performance as she placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run at 19:11.79. Becca Herd (Fy./Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain), Randolph, Johnson, and Wilson combined to finish third in 4x400-meter relay at 4:07.42.
Some members of the team will compete at the Drake Relays next week, while the rest of the squad travels to the Saint Mary’s University Open on Saturday, April 28.
