AMES, Iowa – Simone Childs-Walker (Sr./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) placed sixth out of 40 racers, while teammate Alison Smyth (Sr./Billings, Mont./Billings West) finished 17th at the Iowa State Classic.
The field—which included 31 runners from NCAA Division I programs, four from D-II programs, another four from D-III teams, and one racer from the junior college ranks—was divided into two groups. Both Knights ran in the fast heat as they raced this distance for the first time this season.
Childs-Walker clocked a time of 17:10.71, eight seconds off her school-record pace set at last year’s NCAA Championships but already faster than she raced during the regular season a year ago.
Smyth carried the momentum of a strong cross country season over to indoor track as she finished at 17:25.87. That’s 42 seconds faster than her season-best time from last winter.
The rest of the Carleton track & field team will compete on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Darren Young Classic hosted by Grinnell College. That meet begins at 10 a.m.
