ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Carleton College women’s track and field team took advantage of perfect weather conditions on Wednesday afternoon/evening to post a strong showing at the Tommie Twilight meet hosted by University of St. Thomas. The Knights recorded 19 personal-best performances including a new school record by Alison Smyth (Sr./Billings, Mont./Billings West) in the 1500-meter run. This was the squad’s final tune-up before next weekend’s MIAC Championships.
Smyth’s time of 4:36.90 bested the previous record of 4:37.49 set by Laura Bloedorn ’03, and improved on her previous-best by more than five seconds. She finished eighth in the event, third among Divison III runners. Three other Knights finished in the top-15 overall and the top-eight among D-III competition in the event with Haley Johnson (Jr./Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper), Colette Celichowski (Fy./Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka), and Sarah Trautman (So./Lexington, Mass./BBN) all setting personal bests. Johnson knocked nearly 10 seconds off her PR time.
Other notable finishes on the track included a second-place showing by Simone Childs-Walker (Sr./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:35.61, and ninth-place finish, third among division III runners, by Kaitlin Randolph (Sr./Drummond, Wis./Drummond) in the 800 meters with a personal best of 2:16.77.
The throwers also had a fantastic night, with each establishing a new personal best in at least one of their events. Kao Sutton (So./Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 40.14m, while Avery Johnson (Fy./Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) was sixth in the javelin with 33.20m.
“We had an amazing meet,” said head coach Donna Ricks. “The team looks to be bringing a lot of momentum into the conference meet next weekend.”
