Northfield, Minn. -- St. Mary's University's Ashley Dingles broke the 11-year old MIAC heptathlon record to just edge Carleton's Kim Davis for the 2003 MIAC Heptathlon title. Both competitors surpassed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard.
Dingles scored 4,641 points to outdistance Davis at 4,523. Carleton's Kristi Colbenson was third with 4,375 points, enough for an NCAA provisional qualifying standard and more than 100 points more than the last competitor scored to get into the national meet field a year ago.
Dingels broke the record held by St. Olaf College's Julie (Rademacher) Thorton, set in 1992. Ironically, Thorton is the wife of SMU head coach Paul Thorton. She serves as Dean of Students at SMU and has helped coach Dingels in the event.
The top six finishers either reached NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying standards in the meet.
