MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Amy Elson (Jr./Davis, Calif.) finished ninth at the pentathlon, the opening competition at the 2009 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. She amassed 2,511 points as she recorded a pair of personal bests and a season best during the five-event competition.
Gustavus’ Kaelene Lundstrum defended her title in the event, totaling 3,445 points as she finished first in all five events (55 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meter run).
Elson’s best finish came in the high jump where she placed fifth by clearing a personal-best height of 1.40 meters (4’7”). She added a seventh place showing in the long jump (season-best of 4.18 meters), eighth-place finishes in the hurdles (personal record time of 9.59 seconds) and shot put, and a 10th place finish in the 800 meter run.
Elson has competed in the pentathlon all three years at Carleton, improving her spot in the standings each time. After a 12th place showing in 2007, she moved up to 11th last year.
The rest of the Carleton women’s track and field team begins competition at the two-day MIAC Championships tomorrow. The first event begins at 2:00 p.m.
