LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Several members of the Carleton track and field team took advantage of Spring Break to take a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. It was competition, not castles and roller coasters on the agenda, and the Knights did not disappoint. Sophomore Kelly Lovett (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) won the javelin with a school-record and NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 44.08 meters. Although it’s early in the season, Lovett’s toss ranked her first in the nation.
During the four-day meet, rookie Clare Franco (Brunswick, Maine) recorded a provisional qualifying time of 57.49 while finishing fourth in the 400 meter dash. She trailed a pair of Division I racers and Shakeitha Henfield, a member of the Bahamas 2008 Olympic team.
Other event winners for Carleton included Laura Roach (So./Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) in the 1,500-meter run and Karen Campbell (Sr./ Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) in the 10,000-meter run. Roach posted a 20-second victory with a time of 4:44.42. Campbell edged several Division I and II racers for a 10-second triumph at 37:56.13.
Other highlights include Jill Merkle (Fy./Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) advancing to the finals in the 100-meter hurdles where she finished eighth at 16.58. She was also fifth in the long jump and second in the heptathlon. Kaitlin Randolph (Fy./Drummond, Wis.) was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Knights are back in action on Saturday, April 4 at the Hamline Invitational.
