LA CROSSE, Wis. — Four members of the Carleton College women’s track and field team traveled to the UW-La Crosse Qualifier in hopes of improving their season-best marks and their outlook for entry to next weekend’s national championship meet.
Ruth Steinke (So./Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:16.91. The top 22 women in each event are invited to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships next weekend. Steinke entered the day ranked No. 20 in the country and will hope that her career-best time of 10:58.87—established at last week’s MIAC Championships—holds up with several “last chance” meets being held this week.
Kao Sutton (Sr./Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) placed eighth in the discus throw, measuring 40.93 meters (134 feet, 3 inches). She was also fourth in the shot put today with a distance of 13.33 meters (43 feet, 9 inches). In both events, her top result came on the initial attempt during the final round. Sutton entered the week ranked No. 3 nationally in the discus (46.71 meters) and 21st in the shot put (13.54 meters).
Colette Celichowski (Jr./Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) was first to the finish line in the 1500-meter run, completing the race in 4:41.24. She entered the day ranked No. 27 in the nation and did not improve upon her season best—and school record—time of 4:35.12 established earlier this month.
Ellie Wilson (Jr./Roseville, Minn./Roseville) placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.23, nearly a full second behind her career and season best time of 57.29, which ranks 39th in the country.
The list of individuals participating at the NCAA Championships will be posted on NCAA.com on Sunday, May 18.
