Despite Changeups, Knights Find Success at Bethel Invite

By Robbie Emmet '16 and Sports Information Staff

ST. PAUL, Minn. –Colette Celichowski (So./Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) established a pair of personal bests during the Bethel Invitational. She ran to a fourth-place result in the mile run, trimming nearly five seconds off her previous best with finishing time of 5:07.71. She was not done, however, returning to the oval later in the day and completed a successful double by setting another PR in the 3000-meter run. This time she placed second at 10:26.59.

Seniors Haley Johnson (Jr./Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) and Sarah Trautman (Lexington, Mass./Buckingham, Browne and Nichols) showed the Knights’ depth in the middle distance events. Though the pair prefers the 1000- and 800-meter runs, they psoted strong times of 5:18.08 and 5:16.53, respectively.

In order to work on her speed development, first-year Ruth Steinke (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) came out competing in shorter races than her usual middle-distance events… and did so with impressive results. Steinke was second in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.51, a half-second behind the winner. Steinke added a solid fifth place result in the 800-meter run at 2:22.38. “Her versatility and willingness to challenge herself in a variety of events is what makes Ruth such a great competitor on the track,” said Carleton head coach Donna Ricks.

Amelia Campbell (Fy./Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Sturgeon Bay), the reigning MIAC field athlete-of-the-week, competed in five events and posted a pair of personal bests. She took second in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.43 seconds. Campbell also eclipsed her previous best in the shot put by two feet with a distance of 33 feet, 1.5 inches. Campbell also competed in the high jump, long jump, and the 4x400-meter relay.

In that relay, Reilly Simon (Fy./Grapevine, Texas/Grapevine) teamed up with Campbell, Johnson, and Steinke to finish in third place at 4:10.98.

In the pole vault, Katie Richards (So./Needham, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) became the seventh Carleton woman to clear the 9-foot mark. Her personal record height of 2.75 meters (9 feet, 0.25 inches) places her seventh on the program’s all-time list.

The Knights will host their next competition, the Meet of the Hearts, at Carleton’s Recreation Center on Saturday, Feb. 9. Action is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
