Believe It or Not, Four More School Records Fall at Parents Day Open

By J.M. Hanley '16 and sports information staff

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — This is not a recording. It just feels like it.

The Carleton College women’s track and field team broke four team records on Saturday. That total that would be extraordinary in almost any other season but seems almost normal by the standards of the Knights 2014 run.

Carleton has now tied or eclipsed at least two school records at all five meets this winter (SEE CHART AT BOTTOM). On Saturday at the University of Minnesota Parents Day Open, the Knights proved they were up to the challenge of competing against Division I and II programs as well as a half-dozen MIAC squads.

“Phenomenal performances. We are running strong; we are racing smart,” said Carleton head coach Donna Ricks. “It’s just exciting. These ladies are putting together terrific seasons. Every time I turned around we were setting PRs and school records.”

Colette Celichowski (Jr./Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) and Amelia Campbell (So./Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Sturgeon Bay) led the way with both setting a new individual mark, as well as factoring in the record-breaking 4x400 relay. Additionally, Kao Sutton (Sr./Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) eclipsed her own program standard in the shot put.

Celichowski and Ruth Steinke (So./Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) were the top two Division III finishers in the mile. Celichowski trimmed nearly eight seconds off her season best to finish at 4:58.08. That time was 1.3 seconds better than the previous school record established by All-American Simone Childs-Walker at this same meet in 2010.

The reliably thrilling Campbell followed her teammate’s performance with a 9:03 finish in the 60-meter hurdles. The run was good for a fifth-place finish and another team record, bettering her own school standard of 9.09 established in the season opener. This is the fifth consecutive meet at which Campbell factored in breaking at least one school record.

Campbell wasn’t done. A little while later, she ran the opening leg of the 4x400 relay. When teammates Ellie Wilson (Jr./Roseville, Minn./Roseville), Emma Grisanzio (Fy./Carol Stream, Ill./Wheaton North), and Celichowski—also making an encore—had finished, the stopwatch read 4:00.40. Another team record was broken a more than 1.3 seconds was shaved off the mark established two weeks ago

Sutton made sure the record-breaking didn’t stay solely on the track. The senior tied the school record in the shot put in January and eclipsed it last week with a heave of 12.90 meters. Today she broke her own school mark… three times! He second toss of the meet measured at 12.93 meters. She followed with a distance of 13.10 meters on her next attempt. In the finals, Sutton registered a distance of 13.50 meters, bettering her mark entering the day by nearly two feet.

Other notable performances included Wilson’s sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash. She took sixth with a time of 58.70 to rank third in the MIAC.

Although it was not a school record, Campbell also continued to press hard. She established a new PR with a distance of 5.54 meters in the long jump. That mark is tops in the MIAC, earned her third place on this day, and improved her standing as No. 2 all-time at Carleton.

Zoe Peterson (Fy./Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum) also boosted the performance of the off-the-track contingent. In the triple jump, she took seventh with a total distance of 10.55 meters.

The Knights have one meet remaining before the conference championships. The squad makes the short trek to St. Olaf for the Ole Open Qualifier on Friday, Feb. 28. Events begin at 4:00 pm.
