Humphrey students and others are invited to an informal conversation with Kevin Hartigan, Catholic Relief Services, where he is the Regional Director for the Middle East, Europe and Central Asia. Learn about his career in humanitarian & relief work, the Catholic Relief Services, and working internationally.

Kevin will talk about CRS's International Development Fellows Program (IDFP) and the work fellows do around the world. Each year, CRS places approximately 20–30 fellows in CRS’s country programs. Assignments, of approximately 10 months, start in late August. Specific job responsibilities vary from country to country but usually include work in agriculture, health, peacebuilding, education, microfinance, or a combination of these. The goal of the IDFP is to place fellows in positions where they can draw on their previous education and work experience while broadening their skills. Most fellowships lead to permanent positions with CRS.

Kevin Hartigan is the Regional Director for the Middle East, Europe and Central Asia for the Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Based in Cairo, he oversees roughly 1,000 staff implementing emergency response and development programs in 20 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, The West Bank and Gaza, Egypt, Ukraine, the Balkans and the countries affected by the Syrian crisis (Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Greece). He has been with CRS for 25 years and was previously Regional Director for Asia and for Central Africa; Country Representative in the DRC, Angola and Cameroon; and Project Manager in Haiti. Before joining CRS he did several years of volunteer work in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Brazil and Thailand.

Kevin was born and raised in Minneapolis, has a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Minnesota, and an M.A. and (lapsed) doctoral candidacy in Political Science from Stanford. His graduate research on refugee protection was published in the journal International Organization. He has served on the council of humanitarian advisors to the Caritas Confederation in Rome and has been involved in numerous global initiatives and conferences bringing together academics and humanitarian practitioners.
