Cuts for Cancer 2008
Welcome to Carleton's Cuts for Cancer 2008!
Cuts for Cancer is ACT's annual event designed to raise awareness about cancer and cancer treatments, raise financial donations to give to organizations devoted to cancer research, and provide hair for those suffering from long-term or permanent hair loss. Local stylists donate their time to give haircuts to students, staff and faculty in order to raise money for the Ted Mullin Memorial Fund at the University of Chicago. Ted Mullin was a member of the class of 2006 who died of cancer. The memorial fund benefits pediatric cancer research. The suggested donation is $15 and there will be donated hair products for sale, and you can donate your hair to Locks of Love.
There will be lots of fun activities throughout the day including button making, making cards for children in cancer wards, making a tribute for our tribute display, live music, and an improv/a capella throwdown where you can pledge your support for Cujokra or the Knightengales as they vie to become ACT's Entertainment Group of the Year.
Last year, we raised $2,840 for the Ted Mullin Memorial Fund and 18 people donated their hair to Locks of Love! You can help us make this year's event even more of a success if you:
- Donate you hair (check out the information below about hair donation)
- Shave your head in support of someone who has battled with cancer
- Make a pledge for a friend
- Get a trim or cut and donate money to cancer research
- Volunteer on the day of the event
The event will be held on Monday, April 28th in the Great Hall from 9am to 5pm.
Participating salons:
- Buzz Salon
- Northfield Great Clips for Hair
- Studio 300
- T&R Beauty Bar
How do I donate my hair?
Locks of Love provides wigs for children with permanent or temporary hair loss, including that from chemotherapy treatment. You can donate as little as 6" of hair to Locks of Love! Hair donations of 6"-9" will be sold to for-profit wig companies to offset the cost of making the wigs. Donations of 10"+ will be used directly to make wigs! Hair must be donated in a ponytail and is measured by the length when pulled straight. You can donate your hair if it is dyed, highlighted, permed, curly, or layered. You cannot donate your hair if it is bleached or gray, as bleach hair disintegrates in the wig-making process and the gray hair is not used in children's wigs. Join the 18 students, staff and faculty that donated last year!
