Periodic Commitment
Special Olympics volunteers will have the opportunity to work at such events as the Bowling Tournament and Track and Field Day. Volunteers may be award-givers, team escorts, encouragers, or event assistants, among other things. Long-term commitments might be available, too, such as coach, event coordinator, and volunteer recruiter. Working with the Special Olympics is definitely a rewarding and worthwhile experience!

Caught in the ACT, The Carletonian, Spring ‘06
Another extravaganza is in its final preparation steps at Carleton: The annual Area 10 Special Olympics Track and Field Tournament is in its final preparation steps at Carleton. This will take place on Saturday, May 20th. Adults and children with disabilities from Rice and ten surrounding counties will convene at the Carleton football stadium for a full day of athletic competition in track events including the 50-meter and 100-meter dashes, softball and discus throws, long jump, and high jump. Volunteers are essential to the endeavor. They set up and take down track equipment, run the competitions, cheer on participants, and hand out ribbon awards. Molly Christian, who volunteered last year, said that the athletes “enjoyed just being there and the thrill of the moment.” She believes that this “is something that athletes in general can learn from.” Special Olympics ACT Program Director Lori Halvorson explained that “you just cannot help but go home feeling absolutely marvelous after having seen so many smiles and faces full of joy.” To learn more about the Minnesota Special Olympics, visit www.specialolympicsminnesota.org .
