Purpose of Position:

The Program Director (PD) position is an exciting leadership opportunity for student volunteers to share their passion about a specific service area. One or more Program Directors organize all aspects of an on-going service program and serve as a vital link between a community agency and Carleton. ACT programs are truly student-run, so it’s crucial to have energetic, responsible, and committed Program Directors. The ACT Center staff wants Program Directors to be innovative as they develop their program, but there are some guidelines ACT needs every PD to follow. These expectations are listed below.

  • Gain transferable job skills and program management experience
  • Help meet a community need and facilitate others to do so

Position Expectations:

Community Voice

  • Meet with your community contact at least once each term to discuss your program
  • Assess whether or not your program continues to meet the community's needs
  • Follow up with any service requests from community members or ACT Center staff

Recruiting

  • Participate in ACT Volunteer Fairs and do additional publicity as needed
  • Follow up with every potential volunteer who expresses an interest in your program (includes people who contact you directly and those who are referred by the ACT Center staff)

Orientation and Training

  • Attendance at Fall Program Director Training is mandatory for those on campus
  • Participate in other training sessions and meetings throughout the year
  • Conduct training and/or orientation sessions for your program volunteers

Thoughtful Action and Communication

  • Provide ongoing support to your volunteers
  • Consult with ACT staff regularly and inform staff about your program's special events, interest meetings, and training
  • Notify your volunteers of ACT events and information

Reflection and Celebration

  • Organize at least one method of reflection per term for you volunteers
  • Celebrate your program's volunteers at the end of each term by thanking them
  • Thank your community contact at the end of the academic year

Evaluation

  • Solicit feedback from your volunteers, then share your findings with the ACT Center
  • Complete a program evaluation

Records

  • Keep good notes about your program so there will be information for future PDs
  • Record volunteers' service hours and submit information to the ACT Center at the end of each term
  • Find a replacement PD when you're graduation or going off-campus
  • In spring, submit an update about your program for the following year's ACT brochure
