European buckthorn invades forests, savannas, prairies and wetlands. It causes ecological problems by taking up space normally filled with native plants. Because this tree leafs out earlier in the spring then our native trees and shrubs, it steals the sunshine at a time when our early spring wildflowers are normally completing their life cycle. Forests dominated by this plant are devoid of other ground layer plants due to the dense shade they produce.
