Wiki
The Wiki feature allows simple collaborative editing and creation of web pages. Wikis can be formatted with Wiki Markup or with HTML if the wiki has been given that option.
Creating the Wiki:
- To create a new wiki, hit the Turn editing on button in the upper right corner of Moodle.
![]()
- Go to the Add an activity pull down menu and select Wiki.

- Type in the name of the wiki and a general summary stating the purpose of the wiki.

- For more options, click the Show Advanced button. These options control the wiki Type, HTML mode, and Student admin options.

- There are three wiki Types: Teacher, Groups, Student. In addition, like any activity, the wiki has the Moodle group modes: “No Groups”, “Separate Groups” and “Visible Groups”.

- Teacher
- No Groups: There is only one wiki which only the teacher can edit. Students can view the contents.
- Separate Groups: There is one wiki for every group which just the teacher can edit. Students can view the wiki of their group only.
- Visible Groups: There is one wiki for every group which just the teacher can edit. Students can view the wikis for all groups.
- Groups
- No Groups: There is only one wiki. The teacher and all students can view and edit this wiki.
- Separate Groups: There is one wiki per group. Students can view and edit the wiki of their own group only.
- Visible Groups: There is one wiki per group. Students can change the wiki of their own group only. They can view the wikis for all groups.
- Students
- No Groups: Every student has their own wiki which only they and their teacher can view and edit.
- Separate Groups: Every student has their own wiki, which only they and their teacher can edit. Students can view the wikis of other students in their group.
- Visible Groups: Every student has their own wiki, which only they and their teacher can edit. Students can view the wikis of all other students in the course.
NOTE: A teacher can always edit every wiki in the course.
- Student admin options allow for students to act in certain ways as administrators on the wiki. By checking the corresponding boxes, students will be able to set page flags, strip, remove pages from the wiki, and revert mass changes.
- Set Page Flags: Flags are assigned to a wiki page. Allowing students to set these allows them to change the type or behavior of that page.
- Strip pages: This function purges old versions of all pages stored in the database and just keeps the newest versions.
- Remove pages: This function allows you to remove wiki pages. A quick check is done and pages with errors are shown.
- Revert mass changes: Use this tool to roll back changes to all pages if a particular author makes a mess of many pages in the wiki.
- If you want the first wiki page name to be something other than the wiki name, you can specify it in Page Name. This name will become the first page of the wiki for every created instance of this wiki. If you leave this field blank, the initial page name will be the wiki name, unless you select a page in the 'initial page' field.
- Click on Save changes. Doing so will direct you to a new page where you can edit your wiki page.

- You can edit your wiki at any time by clicking Update this Wiki.
Creating Pages in Wiki:
- To create new pages within a wiki, type in the Edit box, and enclose the name of the new page in brackets ([]). For example, if you wanted a new page called New Page, type [New Page]. Hit Save.

- Moodle will now show your wiki. The new page you created should be in bold and have a blue question mark next to it. Click the blue question mark to edit the contents of your new page. Hit Save.

NOTE: A newly created wiki page will not show up as a page in any of the Choose Wiki Links until you fill it with content (click the blue question mark and then hit Save).
Editing Wiki Pages:
- To edit a specific page within a wiki, click on that page within the wiki then click on the Edit tab near the top of the screen.

- Each page inside a Wiki can be edited easily, using the tools above the area where the wiki text is imputed.
Linking Between Wiki Pages
- Linking pre-existing wiki pages to one another is done similarly to creating a new wiki page.
- To link to one wiki page from another, first choose the wiki page you wish to link from. Once on this page, click on the Edit tab.
- Type the name of the wiki page you wish to link to in this wiki page and enclose the name in brackets ([]). Hit Save.

Choose Wiki Links
The Choose Wiki Links pull down menu allows you to see your wiki pages organized in a variety of ways.

- Sitemap: a sitemap is a graphical representation of the architecture of a web site. This shows you how your wiki is organized.
- Page Index: page index shows an alphabetical listing of the pages contained in your wiki.
- Newest pages: shows the newest pages of the wiki when they were created.
- Most visited pages: shows the most popular pages and how many times they have been looked at (“hits”).
- Most often changed pages: shows the pages that were edited most often and how many changes have occurred.
- Updated pages: selecting this will show the most recently changed pages and when they were last edited.
- Orphaned pages: shows pages that are not linked to from any other page.
- Wanted pages: theoretically, this feature would be used in a situation where a page not yet created or from an outside source, was desired in your wiki. You will never need to worry about this feature.
- Export pages: allows you to send your pages to another place. You will probably never need to worry about this feature.
