Add Blocks

Click here to view the accompanying video tutorial for this topic.

Each course page has a number of blocks, those blue-gray rectangles, that can be situated on the borders of the course page. If editing is turned on, there will be a "Blocks" block that will allow you to add additional blocks. The list is long, and the terminology can be vague, so here is a list of the useful blocks that can be added (some of which are default). You can move any of these blocks from one side to the other (with arrows pointing towards the opposite side), or up from the default location as the last block (or back down) with the up or down pointing arrows.

  • Activities- lists all the different kinds of Activities that are used in that course. Hidden activities will not appear in the list from student view
    activities
  • Anonymous Comments- allow you to ask students for anonymous feedback.  When they send a message in the text box that it creates, it will automatically be sent to you embedded in a message from “Administrative user” and the next time you are in Moodle a window will pop open with the message, or the message may appear in your messages block if you have that on your page.  If there is more than one teacher in the course, you may choose to which person the messages are sent.
  • Blog Menu- basic Moodle blog options
    blogmenu
  • Blog Tags- shows all the Tags used in Blogs within Moodle, will take you to all entries within the course that are tagged with a particular tag when you click on that tag
  • Calendar- shows calendar with upcoming events: can hide/show certain types of events
  • Course/site description- displays the course name and default description, which can be edited by clicking on the little pencil and paper icon.
  • Course menu- aids in navigation through a course page, especially if there’s a lot of information on it.  It provides links to each section of the page, labeled with the title of the section.  Additionally, there is a link to the “Control Panel” which gives you (and your students) intuitive access to the information in the Administration block.
  • Gould Library- gives contact information about the liaison for your department, and links to the libe (editing this block allows you to add extra course categories which adds the appropriate librarians)
    libe
  • HTML- A basic text block; you can add whatever you want to this block by editing it. Office hours, a more thorough course description, pertinent info, etc
  • Latest News- shows newest News Forum posts
  • Loan Calculator- calculates loans with info you put in
  • Mentees- displays links to the profile pages of the individual user’s mentees, if the user has any.
  • Messages- shows messages sent to you recently through Moodle, and links to message history, contacts, and allows you to send messages to contacts and other Moodle users.  For more detailed information, see our page on this block.
    messages
  • My courses- displays links to all of the courses in which the individual user is enrolled.
  • People- provides a link to view all of the participants of a course
  • Quiz Results- shows the highest and lowest (can drop either or both) quiz grades for specific quizzes; edit the block to show ID numbers, full names, or just the grades
  • Random Glossary Entry- displays entry from any or all course glossaries, if there are any glossaries in that course
