Using Podcast Capture

Faculty and Staff:  If you would like to have a podcast blog (aka workflow) for your class or group to post videos to, please email the ATs about setting one up.

Most Podcast Blogs are open for the public to view (posting is limited to group members).  Please keep this in mind when posting to your blog.  View all Carleton podcasts at http://podcast.carleton.edu/.

Using Podcast Capture (Macs only)

Getting Started

  • Go to Applications > Utilities> Podcast Capture (classroom and lab computers also have an icon in the Dock).
  • Enter podcast.carleton.edu as the server and log in with your Carleton credentials.
  • Click on the type of podcasting you would like to do:
    Podcast Capture Main Screen
    • Video: Record from the built-in camera in your Mac or from an external camera attached to your computer.
    • Audio: Record an audio-only podcast.
    • Screen: Record what is happening on your computer screen along with your voice through the microphone.
    • File: Upload an audio or movie file on your computer. (Only MOV, MP4, MP3 files are accepted.)

Recording

  • To begin recording, click the red button at the bottom.Podcast Capture Big Red Button
  • After the countdown, begin recording.
  • Click the gray pause button to pause recording.
  • You can continue recording by clicking the red button again or start over by clicking the Start Over button on the bottom of the window.
  • When you are finished recording, click the Publish button to publish your video.

NOTE: Start or stop recording by pressing Command+F2--this is particularly useful for recording your computer screen, as it means recording can be started in other windows than the Podcast Capture.

Publishing

Podcast Capture Publish Screen

  • Choose the appropriate location in the Workflow drop-down menu. (Only the "outsick" workflow or blog is automatically available to all faculty. Other workflows need to be setup in advance.)
  • Give your video a title (this will also be the title of the post to your class blog).
  • Enter a short description of your video in the Description field: this will be displayed above your video in the blog post.
  • Click Done and wait until the "Your podcast has been successfully submitted" message to appear.
  • To start a new podcast, click the New Podcast button and log in again.

Accessing

  • To find the link to your podcast go to https://podcast.carleton.edu blog site and find your podcast. (Note; you may link directly to your specific podcast or to the blog your specific podcast is in.  It's handy to post these links in your course moodle site.)
  • (Log in to the blog with your Carleton credentials.)
  • To comment on a video, click on the blog post title and click the "Add a New Comment" link below the video.

Suggestions for Podcasting

  • Make sure your area is well-lit if you are recording a video: bad lighting can ruin a video!
  • Speak slowly and clearly--your listeners don't know what you're saying as well as you do, while they can replay it, they can't ask you to repeat it more slowly!
  • If you're recording a screen capture, make sure your movements are slow and clear.  Also, make sure no personal information is showing on your computer screen--other people will see everything you do!
  • If you would like to make a fancier video, all campus Macs are equipped with iMovie.  Podcasts can be recorded and edited directly in iMovie, and then uploaded to your class blog with the File Upload option in Podcast Capture.  For assistance with this step, plan ahead and make an appointment with someone in PEPS.

Suggestions for Linking to Your Podcast Blog from Moodle

The Podcasting Blog server is a separate service than Moodle, but it's not hard to link them in such a way that makes them easy to use together.

  1. Go to your Podcast Blog page, the address will look like http://podcast.carleton.edu/groups/[blogname]/blog
  2. Select that URL address in the top of your browser screen and COPY it (Ctrl or Command + C)
  3. Go to Moodle, Turn on Editing and then choose to Add A Resource > Link to a File or Website
  4. After giving the Link a name, click once in the Location field and then choose to PASTE (Ctrl or Command + V) the address of your Podcast Blog.
  5. In the Window section below, first hit the Show Advanced button to show additional options.  Then set the Keep Page Navigation... option to YES, WITHOUT FRAME.
  6. Click Save and Display to view your linked Podcast Blog with a Moodle header bar across the top of the page!
