WebPages

Departmental web pages: We ask departments to assume responsibility for the content of a web page for the department. The ideal way to assume this responsibility is for one faculty or staff member within the department to serve as the liaison to ITS and the Publications Office for the department's page. Most departmental web pages (including this one) are created using a simple tool called Reason. Academic Technologies and the Publications Office are happy to work with your department liason in creating departmental web pages.

Curricular web pages: If you would like to explore approaches to developing web pages for instructional purposes, we can discuss a variety of current best practices employed at Carleton and from other institutions. The easiest way is to use Moodle, but there are many other options as well.

Personal pages: You are welcome to create personal Web pages. It is a complicated thing to do. Carleton will happily host a page placed in your WebPub folder, but you may want to keep in mind that if you want to keep your pages later, you will have to find a place to host them. There are a number of different programs to help design websites, Dreamweaver being one of the more popular. Photoshop can also be used, but creates a messy hierarchy, and is hard to update. The one program to really avoid for creating html documents is Word; even though it can technically save for website, Word html files break frequently and are very untrustworthy.

Should you choose to take the plunge . . . the Publishing Web Pages Guide will help you get started. Otherwise, we have student workers who are familiar with web page creation and maintenance who can work with you outside of their normal hours.
