Questions about Avian Flu?
With Avian Flu in headlines and newscasts everywhere, the Carleton community is understandably concerned about whether and how this illness could affect our campus. We've set up this web site as a clearinghouse of information about Avian Flu, as well as a place to announce updates in the event of a future outbreak.
Essentials to know at this time are:
- There have been no reported cases of Avian Flu in humans in the United States.
- The primary advice to travellers is to avoid contact with live animal markets and poultry farms in countries where cases have been reported.
- There are currently no restrictions for travel.
- Plans for Carleton study abroad trips remain unchanged.
- Because there is no predicting if or when Avian Flu could become readily communicable from person to person, however, it is wise for individuals to stay informed, and for governments, health organizations, and institutions like Carleton to prepare contingency plans for the event of a future outbreak. Carleton College will monitor reputable health sources daily to keep you informed.
- A very few suspected cases of human-to-human transmission of Avian Flu have been reported globally, but have been limited to those with unusually close contact with an ill person (such as a mother and child). Even those cases are ambiguous, according to the World Health Organization, "since the family members are exposed to the same animal and environmental sources as well as to one another" (more details from WHO).
- International students from the affected countries, or traveling there, can be in touch with International Student Programs (pcrosby@acs.carleton.edu) should they have questions.
We encourage concerned Carleton faculty, staff, students and families to check the sites below or this page for updates. If you have specific questions or concerns about your own health, please consult the Wellness Center or your family physician.
