Risk Management is responsible for, but not limited to, purchasing Carleton College's insurance, selecting insurance companies and brokers, investigation claims, and establishing limits of commercial insurance.  Risk Management collaborates with many departments in promoting risk management goals and assessing risk in order to develop practical solutions to problems.

Global Travel
Students on Off-Campus programs, are covered for emergency assistance through International SOS.  International SOS provides medical referrals, evacuation assistance, and a wide range of travel assistance.

College faculty and staff traveling internationally on College business should notify the Risk Manager (507-222-4178) of their College related international travel before they leave campus to ensure International SOS is aware of their travel.   Faculty traveling with students should include student information in their communication.

High Risk Travel Destinations
The College considers the safety of its students and staff to be of the utmost importance.  Travelers wishing to travel to countries on the U.S. State Department Warnings List need to ensure all risks have been fully and carefully considered by relevant travelers and administrators.  Travelers and administrators must evaluate to determine whether such travel is reasonable on a case-by-case basis and whether insurance is excluded for the travel location.

Please contact the Risk Manager (507-222-4178) if you are considering travel to any countries on the U.S. State Department Warnings List and in particular:  Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Haiti, North Korea, and Cuba.

Safe Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
It is recommended that all employees and students traveling internationally sign up for the U.S. State Department's Safe Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  This is a system utilized by the State Department to connect with the traveler, providing information should conditions change in the foreign location and assist in an emergency.  The traveler need only enroll once and then can update as trips are planned.

Insurance Coverage for Vendors/Contractors
Carleton College requires all vendors and contractors working for the College to carry a minimum amount of insurance.  Insurance requirements vary depending on the nature and hazard of the work being performed.  All approved vendors/contractors must provide proof of insurance in the form of a Certificate of Insurance listing Carleton College as "additional insured".

Insurance Coverage for approved "third parties"
Carleton College requires general liability insurance for all approved "third parties" to use College facilities for specific events.  If the ''third party" in unable to obtain general liability insurance on their own, they can purchase coverage through the University Risk Management and Insurance Association's TULIP Program (Tenants' and Users' Liability Insurance Policy, also known as "Events Coverage"). 

TULIP was designed to provide low cost general liability insurance to users of Carleton facilities through an on-line purchasing process.  Coverage may not be available for all event types.  Use of this program is not a guarantee for insurance.
