New Students to Carleton College

May 2008

Dear New Students of Carleton College:

On behalf of our faculty and staff, welcome to Carleton! This is an exciting time for you and your family, and we are prepared to assist, with the success of your Carleton experience. The content of this mailing covers options to assist you in meeting your financial obligations and addresses many other dimensions of life at Carleton. This is the first of three coordinated paper mailings you will receive from Carleton over the summer, this is Mailing # 1, "Connecting to Carleton".

Mailing # 1 includes the following insertions which should be reviewed and acted upon as needed.

  • Mailing Checklist
  • Paying for Carleton information sheet
  • Computing at Carleton booklet
  • Living at Carleton booklet
  • Common Reading Book and Discussion Guide
  • Bookstore Bookmark and Coupon
  • Buying College Textbooks pamphlet
  • Paper Mailing Request postcard
  • Request for Parent Email Addresses insert

The intention of this mailing is to familiarize you with the resources available on the Carleton web site to ensure you are comfortable and confident in the information you will find there. Use of electronic web based communication is reflective of our green initiatives to reduce paper and other printed materials. Carleton email is Carleton's official means of communication and you should plan to build it into your daily routine. The Computing at Carleton booklet provides your login name and password.

All items identified on the Mailing Checklist require action on your part. Review the checklist, visit www/carleton.edu/student/new, complete the information required and check it off the list (this is the fun part).

We have provided you with an extensive packet of information and we are eager to provide further explanation or assistance if needed. See the Mailing Checklist for contact information.

Looking ahead, in about a week, Mailing # 2, "Information for Parents" will be addressed and sent to your home address. You can expect Mailing # 3, "Being at Carleton" to be sent to you mid-July. You will also receive emails from the Dean of Students office, at your Carleton email address, every Monday during the summer with important and time-sensitive information to keep you informed and engaged.

If you will not have computer access this summer, fill out and return the Paper Mailing Request postcard immediately, and we will send you paper correspondence. Be sure to provide us with your parents email address if they want email contact from Carleton about new student deadlines and fee due date reminders. We look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Sincerely,

Linda H. Thornton

Paying for Carleton

The comprehensive fee for the 2008-09 year is $48,039. This includes tuition, student activity fee, room and board. The tuition charged to students represents only two-thirds of the educational costs per student for 2008-09. The other one-third is funded by income from our endowment, which has been built by the gifts of former generations and the annual fund which is supported each year by our alumni and parents. The combination of these sources creates a balanced budget with continuing growth in our academic programs.

****THE $400 ADVANCE FEE IS DUE JUNE 1, 2008****

To access your invoice, please log into the Hub at http://apps.carleton.edu/student. The Hub is Carleton’s online secure student portal. Be sure to review the Computing at Carleton booklet that is enclosed in this mailing to find your login information. Visit this site anytime to see your statement and make your payments. Expect to receive email communication from the Business Office to remind you of important due dates. Paper bills are not sent, you have access to the Hub at all times and can view or print the statement from the browser, or it can be downloaded as a PDF document. The PDF document can be viewed, printed or emailed to an interested party (i.e., parents, guardians, outside scholarships, etc.).

It is your responsibility to make sure your tuition account is paid on time. Please arrange for payment in a timely manner to avoid a $35 late fee. The majority of our students receive ongoing support from their families during their academic career at Carleton and we encourage our students to share this information with them. Forwarding your tuition statements to them may be very helpful.

The Business Office web site at: http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/business/students has valuable information that may be of interest and should be reviewed:

Costs at Carleton
Payment Options
Student payroll deduction form

I-9 Requirements for student employment (we recommend bringing your passport to Carleton)!
MPIRG waiver
Loan chart

Note that the $200 enrollment deposit, which you have already paid, is separate from the annual comprehensive fee. The comprehensive fee does not include optional fees for MPIRG or music fees.

The Business Office staff most prepared to answer your questions and assist in any way possible with the financial aspects of your Carleton career are:

Debra Fawcett
Student Account Specialist
507-222-4179
dfawcett@carleton.edu

Sandy Pieri
Student Account Specialist
507-222-4165
spieri@carleton.edu

Request for Parent Email Addresses

If your parents would like to receive email contact from Carleton about new student deadlines and notices about fee due dates, please direct them to the Request for Parent Email Addresses form site.

This is the site for parent address changes, opting out of the online parent directory, and for providing us with parent email addresses.

Thank you! We are looking forward to seeing you this fall.
