Reminder: SLAC Job Fairs

Attn: Seniors- Registered participants of the SLAC Job Fairs, keep these dates:

§ Chicago SLAC Job Fair will be on Friday 12/4/09.

§ Boston SLAC Job Fair will be on Wednesday 1/6/10.

§ New York SLAC Job Fair will be on Thursday 1/7/10.

§ Washington D.C. SLAC Job Fair will be on Monday 1/11/10.


Initiative for Service

Summer 2010: Travel abroad and perform volunteer service  (min. 5 weeks) through already established programs in the areas of international community development, including credit and business cooperatives, public wellness and treatment, literacy and education, and other public services in developing countries.

The Initiative will award grants to cover expenses such as application fees, program fees, transportation to and from the site, lodging and meals during the internships for a total grant not to exceed $5,000.

1.     Apply to the organizations sponsoring the service internship. (This process needs to start early since these programs can fill up, have long lead times, or an extensive application process).

2.     Once accepted into an internship which meets the criteria above, submit proposal application through the "tunnel."

Fellowships, Internships, & Opportunities

Margaret for Governor Intern:The Margaret Anderson Kelliher campaign is accepting applications for internship positions for the 2010 Gubernatorial race. They are looking for someone to dedicate 10-12hrs/week to help with the campaign (goes through April 25th at least). Schedule can be flexible to fit the student’s availability. There are internships available in policy and finance. Positions are unpaid. Send a resume and one-page cover letter to Susy Bates at susy@margaretforgovernor.com

MN Zoo – Exhibit Development Intern:MN Zoo seeking individuals interested in assisting design and development of new exhibits. Work schedule is somewhat flexible. Internships are unpaid. See the MN Zoo website and “TUNNEL” for more details. If interested, contact Steve Boyd-Smith’89.

Minnesota House of Representatives Internships: A great opportunity for students to learn during the 2010 legislative session – Feb. 4th to mid May.  Visit http://www.house.mn

Personal Care Assistant: Looking for someone who would enjoy working with a 15yr. old young man who has Aspergers. Needs to help him develop a mutual friendship, develop social and daily living skills, need to plan fun interactive activities, prepare meals and some cleaning, work with parents to help him develop outside interests, and have a desire to learn about Aspergers and Autism. Congressman Erik Paulsen – Congressional Internship Program: Congressman Erik Paulsen’s Office is looking for interns in the District Office in Eden Prairie, MN & Washington, D.C. Interns assist staff with constituent services, communications, administrative tasks, and legislative research. Deadline for the Spring Semester is November 1, 2009, and for the summer, it is April 1, 2009.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship: The1 foundation wants to award 80 scholarships and 50 honorable mentions to sophomore and junior college students committed to careers related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American Health care. Breakthrough Saint Paul Teaching Internship: Breakthrough Saint Paul is looking for a diverse group of college undergraduates to teach at a summer enrichment program for motivated middle school students from the Saint Paul Public Schools. Program runs from June 14 through August 13, 2010; this is a paid internship. Contact Jennifer Otremba, jotremba@breakthroughsaintpaul.org with questions. Application deadline is March 1, 2010. Eric Breindel Collegiate Journalism Award: The Eric Breindel Memorial Foundation wants to award $10,000, and a paid internship at Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal, or The New York Post to an undergraduate. Their works should reflect the spirit of the writings by Eric Breindel: Love of country and its democratic institutions as well as the act of bearing witness to the evils of totalitarianism. Alumni Networking

Alums are one off the best resources in networking. Up to 85% of all positions are filled through networking. Alums volunteer to be included in the alumni directory. They are excited to advise Carls about information in their field. How to contact alums for insider tips:

·   The Initial Contact:

o Ask for their willingness to help you.

o Introduce yourself and the nature of your contact.

o Be sure to mention that you found their contact information in the alumni database.

·   The Second Contact:

o Once the alum replies to your initial contact make a second brief contact.

o Request specific information. Remember, alums are busy, be courteous and respectful of their time.

·   Thank you/Follow-up:

o Once the alum provides you with information, don’t forget to express thanks.

o Also, let him/her know that you will let him/her know  what happens with your career exploration.
