Scholars Trip Information!

October 7, 2009 at 4:14 pm
By bkmoch
General Information:
There are 3 scholars programs available this winter break: Clean Tech (Bay Area), Public Health/Medicine (Atlanta), and Film/Television and Media (LA).
The dates for each program are Nov 29 until Dec 2nd.
All of your expenses will be covered when you get there. This includes all meals, hotel accommodations, transportation, coffee, etc. The only thing you need to pay for is a ticket to and from the city of your program.
There will be approximately 15 students per program. Each program will be headed by a Career Center staff member (Brent Nystrom in Atlanta, Jessica Mueller in LA and Brad Kmoch in the Bay Area) and a faculty member from Carleton who's related to the subject of the program (Debby Walser-Kuntz with Public Health/Medicine, Carol Donelin with Film and Media, and Aaron Swoboda, '01 with Clean Tech) as well as on-the-ground people (alumni and parents) involved in coordinating each program.
What you do:
For each program you will go to various organizations that pertain specifically to the topic of the program.

Target Organizations for Public Health/Medicine (Atlanta):
Emory
Carter Center
CARE
American Cancer Society
CDC
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
CNN Medical
Grady Memorial Hospital
Morehouse School of Medicine
Georgia State
Organizations serving refugee populations with health related issues
Atlanta AIDS Partnership Fund (subset of Greater Atlanta Community Foundation)
Alums/Parents in private practice

Confirmed Organizations for Clean Tech (San Francisco):
IBM
ICF International (NASDAQ: ICFI)
Environmental Defense Fund
The Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) at Stanford University
PARC
Google.org
Draper Fisher Jurvetson
Other organizations being targeted: We hope to have a solar power company or two, biofuel company, a utility, and an alternative energy automobile.  We also may visit the Stanford Graduate Chemistry Department.

Target Organizations for Film/Television and Media (L.A.)
Universal Studios
SONY lot
Warner Bros
UCLA film school
USC film school
Sundance Institute
Paramount
Independent Actors/Actress panel
Independent Writers panel
Interactive Media panel
Independent Directors panel

At most of these places you'll be given an introduction to the organization, you might get a tour of the facility, etc, but you'll almost always have a panel of carleton alums, parents, whoever works there to ask questions to. Most of the visit times consist of students asking the people anything and everything about the company they work for, career paths, general advice, etc. They provide an excellent opportunity to learn about different career paths, what it's like to work in a field, and all the multifaceted careers Carleton alums have.
You will also go to several dinners and receptions where you'll speak with various alums working in the field or parents or friends of the college also in that field. Several of the students who have been on the program still keep in touch with the alums they've met. Everyone at these places WANT to help you. So work on your networking skills and friendly smile!
TO APPLY:
1) Go to the Career Center homepage.
2) Click on THE TUNNEL on your left hand side. You need to scroll down a little to see it.
3) Log in to the Tunnel using your regular Carleton ID and PW.
4) Click on the Jobs and Internships tab on top of the page. Choose The Tunnel Jobs and postings.
5) Type in Carleton Career Center in the Keywords place.
6) Click on SCHOLARS TRIPS WINTER 2009
7) Read the requirements and do exactly what it tells you. The descriptions and directions may be a little confusing, so if you need help feel free to contact the Career Center.
In order to apply, you MUST upload your documents (resume, cover letter, etc) onto the Tunnel. To do that, click on the DOCUMENTS tab on the top of the page (next to Jobs and internships) and simply upload whatever you need. Once you do that, an APPLICATION STATUS box will pop up to the right of the Scholars Trips Winter info page. From there, you can select which documents you want to submit for the application.
DUE DATE: October 16th! No ifs or buts about it. Get it in on time.
If you need help with your resume, cover letter, profile, etc., come into the Career Center and a CA will help you. We have office hours M-F from 11am until 5:30pm and Sun-Thurs from 8:00pm-10:00pm in the libe (study room by the PC lab on 3rd). It's probably a really good idea to have someone look at your resume before you submit it, especially if your resume hasn't seen the light of day since high school.
If you'd like to speak with a student who has been on the program or just want a student's perspective on the programs, feel free to contact Robert Carlton at carltonr@carleton.edu or Judy Bao at baoj@carleton.edu. They're both CAs and would be glad to help you with the application process!
Questions? Concerns? Contact the Career Center! We're happy to help and we always have candy. Always.
