"Engagement Wanted" Program

The Class of 2009 needs your help. Let's show them the power of Carleton connections.

Our seniors are graduating into the worst economy in decades. To help them succeed, we've launched "Engagement Wanted," a pilot program to send their requests for opportunities & advice out to Carleton's alumni, parents, and friends.

What can you do to help? It's simple:

  1. Alumni: Sign up for our weekly "Engagement Wanted" emails. (You can opt out at any time.)
Parents: Contact Brent Nystrom to sign up.
  2. Read a few ads from seniors each week. Beginning April 10, we'll send you a random sampler of five "Engagement Wanted" ads from Carleton seniors. When you receive an email, just scan it to see if you have any advice, contacts, or opportunities to offer the students featured.
  3. Connect any way you can. You need only contact students with whom you find a connection, and your level of involvement is up to you.  Could you contact the student with one-time advice? Are you willing to provide sustained mentoring? Do you have a referral or lead? Would you be open to an informational interview or shadow visit? Do you have an internship to offer? Does your organization have summer jobs available? Do you know of entry-level jobs that fit the student’s profile? Any type of help is welcome!

Examples

Here are some examples of the ads you'll receive from students:

TAKING A BREATHER BEFORE MED SCHOOL, aiming for a year-long research opportunity. Biology major, biochemistry concentrator, research experience every summer since senior year of high school. I would be happy to send you examples of past work; research interests are wide-ranging and flexible. Heard of anything in your area?

PASSIONATE ADVOCATE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE seeks employment with equally passionate nonprofit agency.  Through my political science education plus extensive volunteer work and activism has given me I have constructed a strong foundation in social issues & advocacy. Special areas of interest include urban poverty and children's health, but I'd consider any organization working to make the world a better and more just place.

I WANT TO SEE THE WORLD!  Service, business, and other opportunities welcome. Qualifications: sociology/anthropology major, fluent in French, 4 year volunteer for Habitat and Kids for Conservation, went on the political economy program in China, comfortable anywhere, remarkably strong stomach.  Interested in any part of the world. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Please sign up for "Engagement Wanted" today.

To volunteer, watch your email for a sign-up invitation from the Career Center, or use this link to sign up online (Carleton Alumni login required; parents should contact Brent Nystrom to sign up).

Thank you for your participation! Remember, any help you can offer would be welcome to our seniors.
