Our Services
One-on-One Life, Education, Career Planning Counseling
The Career Center staffs four professional advisors who are
available for appointments and drop-ins during the academic year. Students can also meet with counselors during winter, spring, and summer breaks.
Self-Assessment Workshops and Inventories (MBTI & CISS)
Offered throughout the academic year, Myers-Briggs Type
Indicator and Campbell Interest and Skill Survey workshops (including interpretation sessions) clarify students' unique abilities and interests. Students missing the workshops can stop by the Career Center anytime to take either survey and schedule a follow-up appointment with a career counselor for interpretation.
Career Planning Workshops, including deciding on a major, résumé writing, interviewing, and job search skills.
These workshops teach students how to research options, write strong résumés, interview effectively, and much more.
Résumé Writing Sessions and Advising
Career Advisors are also available by appointment or by drop-in for one-on-one résumé assistance.
Alumni Panels about specific jobs and career fields
The Career Center works with departments to co-sponsor information panels to introduce students to career paths.
Career Explorations (an alumni-shadowing program)
Through observing alumni in their places of employment for one to five days, students can get an inside look at career fields of their choice.
Credentials Service
Students can establish a free confidential or open credentials file to which requested reference letters are sent and stored. When a student or an alum needs letters sent to an employer or grad school, the Career Center does so free of charge for the first five addresses a year.
Graduate School Testing (GRE, MCAT, LSAT)
Carleton is a test site for the subject tests of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), and the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Each test is held at Carleton twice a year, and students need to register early to assure a place at the Carleton test site.
On-Campus Recruiting and Résumé Referrals
Some on-campus recruiting is held in the Career Center for Junior internships and full-time employment. Students should watch the bi-weekly online Career Center Bulletin for details.
Access to Job Fairs
The Career Center provides access to job fairs designed to link liberal arts students to potential employers, including the SLAC (Selective Liberal Arts Colleges) Fairs held in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., Minnesota Private College Fair, Minnesota Education Job Fair, and Liberal Arts Career Network Virtual Fair.
Summer, Winter Break, and Full-Time Employment Notices
All of these notices are accessible to students via our online jobs database and links from our webpage.
Internship Listings (NNB Internship Weekly and Career Center Homepage)
The Career Center offers an extensive database of up to approximately 8,000 internships as a member of the Liberal Arts Career Network (LACN) consortium. We also feature links to other databases on our webpage.
Interview Workshops and Mock Interviews
Addressing all aspects of the interview process, these sessions cover preparation, attire, and practice in answering difficult questions, as well as steps that can be taken after the interview, like sending thank you notes within 24 hours of the interview. Students can also schedule one-on-one practice ("mock") interviews which are videotaped and privately reviewed by the student and counselor.
Faculty Career Coordinators (liaisons between the Career Center and academic departments)
These faculty are appointed by department chairs to work with the Career Center to present special events and panels to make information available to students.
Computers, Laser Printer, Scanner, and Typewriter available for student use
For doing career-related research or filling out applications, students can use these resources any time the Career Center is open. (From 8:00-5:00 Monday through Friday)
Career Resource and Graduate School Library
With over 1,200 titles, this collection contains books, periodicals, and videos about test preparation, job searches, internships, graduate schools, careers, and more. In 2004, we acquired the WetFeet Library of career resources. Students can check out materials. Many online career resources are also available to students including the Vault Library.
Alumni Networking, Shadowing, Resources, and Events
The Career Center can help connect students with alumni worldwide for informational interviews about a specific career, field, or sector. Through the Career Explorations Program, students shadow alums at work. And alumni often present information sessions at Carleton during the school year.
Publications: Internship Weekly, Career Center Bulletin, and Pathways
Internship Weekly, devoted to providing a sampling of available internships of interest to Carleton students, is published each Wednesday online and on the back of the Noon News Bulletin(NNB), which is available in the dining halls. The Career Center Bulletin is electronically issued to all juniors and seniors bi-weekly on Mondays and features workshops, events, an on-campus recruiting schedule, career-related website links, and job, grad school, and fellowship opportunities. At the beginning of each term, the Pathways newsletter provides information and tips particularly relevant to first- and second-year students, including a poster of the Career Center workshop schedule for the term.
Drop-in Hours for Quick Questions
A counselor is available Monday through Friday from 2-3 p.m. to answer students' walk-in questions. Career Assistants are also available in several locations.
Peer Advising
The Career Assistants (CAs) are student leaders selected and trained to be an extension of the Career Center. They provide information about the Career Center's services, hold office hours in the Career Center, library, residence halls, and Great Space, and serve as advisors for students. CAs are often the first point of contact and referral.
Career Center Webpage and Online Resources
Check out the rest of the webpage resources available to your student 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please encourage him/her to browse and to contact us by phone, email, or drop by if they have questions or need additional assistance.
Brief Career Center Tours
When you are at Carleton, please stop by and also encourage your student to drop in for a tour of the Career Center, which is located in Sayles-Hill 050. All are welcome any time from 8:00-5:00. Just ask at the front desk for a tour.
