Researching Job Fields

If you want to find out about different fields of work or different professions, regardless of particular employers, check out these sites:

  • Spotlight on Careers - Carleton and other selective liberal arts colleges have created this site to help liberal arts students find out about industries specifically geared toward them.
  • Experience On-Campus - This career information site provides information on industries that are hiring college graduates. You'll have to login using a Carleton username and password but if you call the Career Center at x4293 or e-mail sbovbjer@carleton.edu, we can get you that information.
  • The Career Exploration links page - A great source of information arranged by job field. If you're interested in a career in anything from architecture to social service, this is the place to find out all about it.
  • Job Star - This site can help tell you how to get to a job you want and will show you some possible career paths. Learn how to get into your chosen career, and what to expect from it.
  • Contacting Alumni - Alums can give you plenty of information about a job industry. After all they work there. They are usually helpful and eager to talk to students. They can answer the questions no database or brochure can!
  • Vault - Liberal Arts Career NetWORK - Company, industry and career profiles and guidebooks.
***NOTICE - This database is for current student access only. The system will assign you a password that is good for 24 hours.
  • JobWeb - This service of the National Association of Colleges and Employers has information and resources for college grads about different tools, including an interactive career exploration tool.
  • The Occupational Outlook Handbook - This on-line resource gives general information about what it's like to work in a variety of fields.
  • The Riley Guide - Helps you learn what people in different careers do. It's a very comprehensive site, and highly recommended if you aren't sure exactly what paralegals an environmental activists do (for example).
