Carleton Scholars Programs

Purpose:
These three-day programs are designed for Carleton students with the ultimate goal of equipping them with the tools and skills necessary for the competitive internship and full-time job search processes in their respective industries.

  • Clarify job and career focus through greater understanding of the field
  • Enhance marketability to employing organizations through acquisition of industry knowledge and other skills including project management, teamwork and presentation skills, and familiarity with basic accounting and financial analysis
  • Utilize effective job search skills, including résumé writing, networking, and interviewing skills

Details:

  • The public policy trip to Washington DC is scheduled for March 16-19, 2008.
  • The social action trip to the Twin Cities is scheduled for March 16-19, 2008.
  • Preliminary activities will take place end of February 2008.
  • Students are expected to make their own travel arrangements to Washington DC and the Twin Cities.
  • All accommodations in Washington DC and the Twin Cities are being provided by the College.
  • Up to fifteen scholars per trip will be selected through a competitive process.

Sites to be visited (tentative):

Public Policy Scholars Program (DC): Department of Justice, National Public Radio, Department of State/US AID, Department of Treasury, World Wildlife Fund, National Security Agency, Urban Institute, Brookings Institute, All Things Considered (Robert Siegel)

Social Action Scholars Program (Twin Cities): The following are alumni or other friends of Carleton, by organization, tentatively agreeing to participate: MN House of Representatives (Legislative Analyst), Women's Foundation of Minnesota, Hennepin County Children & Family Services, City of Minneapolis (Deputy Mayor), MN Community Development Agency, State Public Defender (Managing Attorney), Upper Midwest Hydrogen Initiative, Great Plains Institute, MN Historical Society (Director of Government Relations)

Eligibility:

The programs are open to students in the classes of 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Application Deadlines and Requirements:

  • Submit your application materials by no later than Monday, February 18, 5 pm. to: Scholars Program, c/o Career Center, Sayles 050. Apply Early: applications will be screened by a faculty selection committee as they arrive.
  • Date of Mandatory orientation/preparation meeting for accepted Scholars to be announced.

Information: Contact any career center staff member. Students will be selected based on the strength of their application materials (see below), and on the overall balance of trip participants’ interests and backgrounds. It is not required that you plan to pursue a career in a particular area—only that you are presently interested in the area that you choose.

Your application must include the following:

Cover Sheet that includes:

  • Your full name, date of birth, and social security number (needed for security clearances)
  • Class year
  • Major (if declared)
  • Which scholars program you are applying to (Public Policy or Social Action)
  • Names and contacts of two recommenders (one must be a professor; note that no letters are needed - just names and contact information)
  • Personal contact information:
    • Emergency contact information while on trip (name, phone number, city/state, and relationship to you)
    • Your permanent address, phone number and cell phone number
    • Contact information and address during the remainder of spring break (if different from above)

Financial Assistance: If you apply for transportation funding for the DC program, please include your request in a separate envelope (this does not impact your application or acceptance; it merely helps us plan for the necessary funds).

A Letter of Interest (no more than two pages) that helps us get to know you and why you are enthusiastic about going on this trip. Also, include the following in your letter;

  • Analyze one of the organizations we will be visiting and provide 4-6 burning questions you have for the organization based on your research. The analysis and questions should reflect an understanding of the organization, professional and intellectual curiosity, and ability to synthesize information.

Required participation in the orientation/preparation meeting for accepted Scholars.
