Northfield Summer Ventures Plus Internship
During the summer of 2008, there will be one paid part-time internship for a Carleton student to work as site assistant with the Northfield Summer Ventures Plus (SVP) Program. The program works with elementary and middle school children who struggle academically or have social, emotional, or environmental challenges. About 50% are recent immigrants.
The site assistant intern will help to plan and lead programs/activities for a class of 15-20 students, while working as a team with a licensed teacher and a Northfield high school student leader. The site assistant will work from 10am-4pm, Monday through Thursday, for 7 weeks (mid to late June until the first or second week of August), and will be paid approximately $2500 for this part time work.
Application Instructions
Applications are due to the Career Center by February 29th. Selection decisions will be made by the SVP director before the end of winter term (March 22). Applications should include: a cover letter expressing your interest in and commitment to working with this population in Northfield; your resume; the Northfield School District’s standard application (available online); and the names and contact information of two recommenders.
Priority will be given to Carleton students heading into youth development, education, or social work. The qualifications will include some experience working with children (mentoring, tutoring, being a camp counselor, etc) and a demonstrated ability to take initiative, be flexible, reliable, responsible, and energetic. Or, in the words of one of the supervisors, the "fit" will depend on "passion, commitment, and chemistry." All class years are eligible, including graduating seniors who already have experience with this Northfield population.
If you have questions about the program, please contact the Chaplain’s Office, the Career Center, or Lily Thiboutot ’08, who worked with SVP last summer. This internship is sponsored by the Interfaith Social Action Fund.
