Questions to Ask

To be prepared for your informational interview, research basic aspects of the career field or organization and compile a list of your questions. Preparation will result in a thorough, smooth interview and will evidence your interest and seriousness. Check out this list and tailor these questions to fit your purpose.

Possible Questions

  • What is the best preparation for this work?
  • How do most people get into this field?
  • What hiring criteria are used in this field?
  • What is your typical day like?
  • What motivates you?
  • What challenges do people in this field face?
  • How is your time divided between working with information and people?
  • What other fields do you suggest I investigate before deciding?
  • What are the field's major issues today/for the future?
  • Which aspect of your job do you enjoy most/least?
  • What does the employment outlook look like for this field?
  • Can you outline typical career paths?
  • Where can I learn more about this organization?

Questions for the end of the interview:

  • To whom should I talk next to learn more about this industry?
  • If I look for an internship or job in this field, where would you suggest starting? (Let him or her know what you have done already.)
  • What else do you think I need to know in order to make a good decision about working in this area?
  • Are there any professional or networking groups I can join to expand my knowledge of this field?
