Evaluation & Decision Making (Third Step)

Goals

  • Evaluate and make preliminary decisions based on knowledge about yourself, your experiences, values, and life/career goals.
  • Gain added experience and confirm or change your career choice.
  • Consider graduate or professional school options.

Recommended Activities

  • List tentative goals, weigh options, and make some preliminary decisions about various post-Carleton career plans. It is advisable to have a primary plan as well as a backup plan(s).
  • Conduct informational interviews with alumni to learn about chosen fields.
  • Talk to a career counselor about alternatives.
  • Talk with faculty members about graduate school options. Conduct preliminary research on graduate programs and talk to an advisor or career counselor about the graduate school application process.
  • Attend interviewing and job search workshops.
  • Refine resume for internships and jobs.
  • Apply for and participate in an internship.
  • Schedule a practice interview in the Career Center to prepare for employment and graduate school interviews.
  • Attend information sessions offered by organizations.
  • Attend scholarship/fellowship information meetings.
  • Decide when to take the GRE or other exams.
  • Register for a lighter course load senior year to allow time for your job or graduate school search.
  • Buy interview clothes over the summer before your senior year to have available on campus.
