Lemelson Center Fellows Program

October 21, 2009
By Christopher Tassava
The Lemelson Center Fellows Program supports projects that present creative approaches to the study of invention and innovation in American society. These include, but are not limited to, historical research and documentation projects resulting in publications, exhibitions, educational initiatives, and multimedia products. The fellowship program provides access to the Smithsonian's vast artifact and archival collections, as well as to the expertise of the Institution's research staff. The Center offers fellowships to scholars and professionals who are pre- or postdoctoral candidates or who have completed advanced professional training. Fellowships are awarded for a maximum of ten weeks and carry a prorated stipend. Fellows are expected to reside in the Washington, D.C. area, to participate in the Center's activities, and to make presentations on their work to colleagues at the museum. The next deadline is January 15, 2010. A complete application for a Lemelson Center Fellowship consists of: • Application form available online (150K Microsoft Word document) or from the Fellowship Coordinator • Curriculum vitae • Proposal abstract (no longer than two double-spaced pages) • Detailed description of project (approx. 10-12 double-spaced pages), including methodology, schedule, bibliography, Smithsonian resources to be used, relevance to the Lemelson Center's mission, and intended product or results of your work • Letters of support from three people familiar with your project (N.B., Smithsonian staff members may not write letters of recommendation) Applications must be submitted via email by 15 January 2010. Fellowships will be announced by 15 April 2010. Fellowships will begin on or after 1 June 2010. All application materials will be made available to the Lemelson Center staff and its advisors. The Lemelson Center Fellowship is open to all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or age.
