Science and Higher-Ed. Access VISTA

I'm am from St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated as part of the Carleton class of 2011 with a degree in biology. The year I am serving as the Office of Academic Civic Engagement's Science and Higher Education Access VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) as an AmeriCorps and Minnesota Literacy Council Member.

I believe that education is critical for social change. As my title reinforces, I am passionate about higher education access for all students, the importance of scientific reasoning being taught at all grade levels, and the importance of reciprocity in educational activities.

I do my best to have as little impact on the planet as I can and a great of an impact on its people as possible. I tend to be outdoors whenever I can be: hiking, camping, climbing, general adventuring, and if I have to be indoors, I prefer to be cooking with friends, rebuilding bicycles, or reading a good book.

I'm a senior SOAN major hailing from the great town of Northfield, Minnesota. Since I traveled such great distances to attend college, the ACE office has allowed me to work with the surrounding community in new ways and with a new perspective. My interests and work revolve around youth empowerment and education related activities in Rice County--I am working toward elementary education and living a life surrounded by good food and cross country ski adventures.

Raised by wolves in the lawless Cleveland suburbs, Danny came to Carleton an aspiring young poet. Three years and a half dozen curricular sea-changes later Danny is an Art and Art History major working on arts outreach for the ACE office. He is interested in the unique position of art and art as empowering observation and creating shared meaning. He also particularly enjoys debating the finer points of Montreal-style bagels.

I'm a junior religion major from New York City. Since coming to Carleton I've spent a lot of time working with the Haiti Justice Alliance. I'm also an EthIC associate this year, and I hope to help EthIC and ACE act collaboratively in 2012. I'm also working on making the website beautiful and up-to-date. I enjoy playing guitar, seeing owls, and eating red peppers.

Coming from a eclectic educational background - from unschooling, to private boarding school and public high school - I've loved seeing varied and radical models of education in action! At Carleton, I've been involved in issues of food justice and education, coordinating the Real Food Challenge on campus, participating in Food Truth, and working as a tutor through the Northfield Reads and Counts program. At ACE, I am currently working with the after-school tutoring program in Faribault, and am looking forward to strengthening our partnerships with Carleton, and in the wider communities of Northfield and Faribault.
