Legislative Letter Competition: Project Pericles

Debating 4 Democracy: Legislative Letter Competetion Poster

  • Passionate about campaign finance, climate change, federal budget deficit, funding for higher education, gun control, or K-12 education?
  • Want to concoct your own legislative response to a national security issue?

On March 21st and 22nd, 2013, student leaders from each of the participating Periclean colleges and universities are invited to attend the 2013 D4D National Conference at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts in New York City. The conference will consist of workshops, keynote addresses, and panel discussions that will introduce the students to leading figures in civic engagement, education, environment, politics, public policy, and social entrepreneurship. To participate in the legislative hearing and to encourage students to write their elected officials, Project Pericles is requesting an original letter to an elected offical from groups (two or more students) at Periclean Colleges and Universities.

The top five letters will be selected to represent Carleton at the conference. Elected representatives as well as education and community leaders will then choose five finalists from 28 colleges across the nation to present their letters to current and former senators. At the end of the event, the legislators will select a winning letter and that team will receive a $3,000 award to help promote their cause. Semi-finalists will receive a $500 award.

Students whose letters are selected as one of the six national finalists will receive an all expenses paid trip to the 2 day conference in New York on March 21st and 22nd. The conference will host over 60 student leaders and will provide an opportunity for students to discuss public policy issues and connect with each other.

Full guidelines and topic suggestions are available in the attached PDF. Letters must be 1000 words or less. They are due via e-mail to Adrienne Falcon at the Academic Civic Engagement office by January 30th. For more information, contact Muira McCammon (mccammom), or Adrienne Falcon (afalcon).

For more information about last year's D4D competition, which Carleton won, see the article in the last year's Carletonian. For ideas and examples, last year's winning letters are hosted on the Project Pericles website.
