STEM and Civic Engagement Workshop: December 11-12, 2013

Whether you are new or experienced, this HHMI funded workshop will provide a space for faculty to incorporate and/or strengthen a civic engagement component in their science and math courses. Dr. Judith Ramaley, nationally known STEM advocate and civic engagement leader, will join us for a day and a half to share her experience and provide support for curriculum development. Time will be set aside for individual and group work. We will also organize a session with community partners so that faculty and partners can explore projects together.

Structure:

This day and a half long workshop will enable participants to develop a better understanding of the field of science and civic engagement, different forms of civic engagement projects that science and math courses can incorporate with local, regional, national and international partners. On day one we will provide an overview of approaches to civic engagement and an opportunity to learn about models of science and civic engagement from across the country. Then we will learn from community leaders about what is happening in terms of health, the environment, and education in Rice County as a way of learning about communities with which you might you want to engage. On day two we will focus on how to launch and sustain campus/community partnerships and engaged learning options at Carleton.
