Issues and Recommendations

These suggestions are an attempt by the researchers to assess and synthesize development priorities put forward by the diverse interests of the business community.

Land acquisition

Northfield should continue trying to annex land to the northwest.  This land should be developed for science, technology, and green industries.  These companies may create a market for the underutilized office space in the downtown.

Balanced “big box” and “local” development

There are benefits to both types of business in the city.  Marketing collaboration between the two should be strongly encouraged by existing organizations.

  • “Big box” advantages
    • Draw a regional consumer.
    • Contribute to local community programs.
    • Meet the needs of a particular demographic.
  • “Local” advantages
    • Draw tourists.
    • Contribute to local community programs.
    • Keep profits in Northfield, feeding back into the local economy.

Property tax policy

State Representative David Bly has proposed a bill that would reduce or eliminate property taxes on commercial businesses in historic buildings in small-town, downtown districts.  This would provide tremendous relief to the Northfield business owners experiencing 250% tax increases since 2000 and help fill vacant space.
