The Class of 1954 generously built a council ring as part of their 50th Reunion gift to the College. The council ring design originated in the early 1900s by landscape architect Jens Jensen, a conservationist who worked closely with Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School of design.

Margaret Ann “Ranny” Towsley Riecker ’54 was instrumental in helping Carleton receive a $2 million Towsley Foundation grant to strengthen the sciences.

Judd Alexander '49 got some good advice from his first boss: Always contribute to charity. Alexander took those words to heart, and Carleton has been the beneficiary of much of his generosity.

As parents of two young children, Matt Forster '93 and Sarah Blaisdell Forster '93 took the usual step of setting up a will to provide for their family in the event of their deaths. But the Forsters also took a more unusual action—at least for people their age—of adding a provision to their will that gives some of their assets to Carleton.

Judy Sosted ’61 has established the Judith Ann Sosted ’61 Scholarship for Off-Campus Studies, designed to provide financial assistance to women students who want to study abroad.

From making sure her hairdresser knows about Carleton to ensuring that every student can study a musical instrument, former staff member Pauline Utzinger '47 may be the College's most wide-ranging supporter.

Carleton has received more than a few unusual donations over the years. One alumnus set up a “slush fund” to help the College keep its sidewalks cleared, and former librarian Dacie Moses donated her house with the stipulation that it remain open for students to bake cookies. In the tradition of these interesting gifts, alumna Mary Neemes Pennell '62 has given a lamp to the College that is made from a bust of 18th century German poet Friedrich Schiller.
