Sweeping Support for Custodial Scholarship

If there's one thing you can be sure about, it's that you won't find any dirty money in the Custodial Scholarship Fund. In addition to keeping the College clean and running smoothly, Carleton custodians have found time to befriend many students, and, in 1993, custodian Pat Flynn proposed providing financial assistance to students as well. Today, nearly three-quarters of the custodial staff earmark a portion of each paycheck to fund the endowed scholarship, which is given each year to at least one student.
Flynn also organized the custodial staff's first annual bake sale in 1997 to fund the scholarship, an event that attracts hundreds. This year, the sale netted a record $1,598—a tidy sum by any measure.
Nonetheless, Flynn remains modest about the effort's success. "Having money taken out of my paycheck is so painless that I don't even feel it, and the bake sale is always a lot of fun," she says. "It makes us all feel good when we find out which student got the scholarship."
