A Perfect Match

Jack Schuler supports his own alma maters—Tufts and Stanford—but when it comes to getting the most bang for his educational buck, he says Carleton stands above many of the country’s best-known schools.
“For my daughter, Tess, Carleton was a terrific school,” says Schuler, who is the father of Therese Schuler Hoffman ’97. As chair of the Board of Trustee’s finance and planning committee, Schuler says he has seen “how wisely Carleton spends its money. The College is prudent and a very good custodian of the gifts it receives.”
For that reason, Schuler and his wife, Renate, have issued a $2 million matching gift challenge to parents of current and past students. Schuler hopes that the challenge will encourage parents to consider a gift for Carleton—and to recognize the impact their gift can have.
“Most parents know that even paying full price for a Carleton education covers just a fraction of the true cost of that education; the rest is funded through gifts,” Schuler says. “Carleton can do a lot with $2 million. We hope, by offering a match, that parents will conclude that a gift to Carleton is an even better investment.”
The Schuler Parent Challenge
Carleton parents Jack and Renate Schuler P ’97 have issued a $2 million dollar-for-dollar matching gift challenge to encourage parents of current and past students to support Carleton’s campaign. Gifts made in response to the Schuler Challenge can be designated for the residence halls project.
TO BE ELIGIBLE, PLEDGES AND GIFTS MUST BE:
- non-annual-fund commitments of $10,000 to $250,000; pledges may be paid over a five-year period
- received between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009 (this includes second gifts and additions to existing funds)
- given by parents who are neither alumni nor married to alumni
