Off-Campus Study Programs
Students considering off-campus studies must work directly with the Off-Campus Studies office (Leighton 119) on all aspects of planning, applying and confirming participation in any off-campus studies program.

Faculty advisers may offer the following guidelines for students:
- The Off-Campus Studies Adviser is available every afternoon in Leighton 119 to assist students who are interested in Carleton seminars and non-Carleton OCS programs. Students may call X4332 to make an appointment with the OCS Adviser.
- A maximum of 54 credits (two semesters or one full year) may be transferred from non-Carleton off-campus studies programs. Credits from Carleton OCS seminars are counted as Carleton credits and are not included in those 54 credits.
- The residency requirement requires that a student must study on campus for a minimum of six terms (108 credits). Transfer students, in particular, must earn a minimum of 108 credits on campus.
- Graduation requirements - distribution, writing, foreign language, RAD, physical education and total credits of 210 - can be met with on-campus courses and with courses from approved off-campus programs.
- Some major requirements may be met with courses from off-campus programs. Students must confer with the department chair prior to studying off-campus about applying non-Carleton off-campus study credits to their major. Students must also consider major courses taught in sequence, alternate years, etc. as they plan their off-campus studies.
- Non-Carleton program credits toward a major, concentration or distribution requirements must be approved by the appropriate department chair. The student must complete the Approval for Special Credit for OCS form (available in the OCS Office or the Registrar's Office) with the department chair and submit it to the Registrar.
- Carleton seminars taught in the summer require that the student take off a term during the following academic year. Students must check with the OCS Office about those scheduling requirements.
The following student checklist may help students complete the steps necessary to participate in an OCS program:
- All students considering off-campus study should discuss their plans with their academic adviser and the Off-Campus Studies Adviser.
- Students should begin planning their off-campus study two to three terms prior to departure, using the resources of the OCS Office, program information meetings, program Web sites and other students and faculty familiar with the program.
- Students interested in Carleton seminars must complete the application process by the published deadline for that program.
- Students interested in non-Carleton programs must pick up an Off-Campus Studies Petition (Petition form and Program Review) in the OCS Office and submit it to that office no later than the third Thursday in the term prior to departure. Petitions will NOT be accepted after the deadline.
- Program applications must be submitted directly to the sponsoring institution.
- OCS petitions will not be considered retroactively.
- Financial aid is not available to students who have not had their program and their OCS status approved on time by college procedures.
- Students will be notified by the OCS Office about acceptance into Carleton seminars and about approval of non-Carleton program participation.
- Students participating in Carleton seminars register for those courses as they would for courses taught on campus.
- Students participating in non-Carleton programs will not be able to register for the term designated off-campus, nor will they have access to College housing during that term.
- Students using financial aid toward a non-Carleton off-campus program should check with the Office of Student Financial Services and arrange with the Business Office for payment of program fees.
Students must check with the Off Campus Studies office about deadlines for Carleton seminar applications and the off-campus studies petition for non-Carleton programs. For futher information: http://go.carleton.edu/ocs
