Language Placement and Testing

If you have a background in one or more of the languages offered at Carleton, and are interested in continuing your study, it is necessary for you to take a placement exam to determine the appropriate course for which to register.

Typically, entering students with a background in French, German or Spanish take an online exam during the summer before they enter Carleton. Students with knowledge of Russian, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Chinese, or Japanese take a placement exam during New Student Week.

Students may view their placement results on the web after July 15. For more information, contact Mary Tatge, language department administrative assistant.

Most students start language in their first year; if you don't place out of language you have to enroll in some language study by your fifth term. If you haven't studied a language in secondary school or you wish to begin a new language at Carleton you should begin language study during the fall term, or winter term of your first year if you are beginning Latin or Hebrew.

If a student has knowledge of a language not offered at Carleton, contact the Associate Dean of the College Office so that testing can be arranged.
