Taking a Leave of Absence

The student leaves Carleton for a period of one to three terms, earning no credit towards the Carleton degree. Students most often use this as a break from study, to take a noncredit internship, to work, travel, gain perspective, or achieve a sense of independence. Terms spent on leave do not count towards the twelve academic terms by which a student's academic progress is determined, although some students who are ahead on credits when they leave may still graduate with their entering class. Two-term leaves may, and three-term leaves will result in a change of class year. Students apply for leave on a petition form available in the Office of the Dean of Students, Severance 110.
